Clay Therapy: Hair Arcillotherapy

The clay is an ingredient which, because of its properties, is becoming common in the cosmetic treatment of the skin and hair in clinics and spas. It is collected directly from the ground; it is the result of elements such as derivatives of aluminum silicates and colloidal hydroxides with iron in their composition, potassium, boron, aluminum, mixed sulfur and calcium.

Clay is an absorbent of toxins and impurities, and has healing , anti-inflammatory, purifying, astringent, antiseptic and remineralizing properties. It promotes tissue healing and restoration, stimulates blood and lymph circulation, and has an immediate tightening and antiseptic effect. The clay can be used on the hair, face and body.

Have you ever put clay in your hair? Besides being good for the skin, the clay also has undeniable benefits for the hair .

Clay has very efficient elements in nutrition and hydration and can restore lost keratin in damaged hair. The clay mask treatment helps purify, remove excess oil and strengthen the scalp . Helps in healthy hair growth, protein restoration and strand sealing.

Clay treatment as an anti-residue shampoo

The clay treatment detoxifies the scalp, reduces excess oil and exfoliates the skin by removing impurities. For those people who use many creams, leave-ins or silicones, it is excellent that they use it every 15 days as a shampoo. The clay helps clean and remove all these residues that accumulate on the scalp . With clay an exfoliation of the scalp is made.

Therefore, before washing your hair normally, prepare the clay (you can leave the preparation much more liquid than usual) and apply it to the scalp. You can use your fingers or a brush, although we think a brush is better, gently massaging the scalp for two minutes. Then rinse off and use your regular shampoo and conditioner. You can see our article on How to wash your hair effectively , to improve your technique.

Using clay on hair

Place the clay in a glass, ceramic or plastic container (never use a metal container) and add water (filtered, boiled or demineralized) slowly until you have a light pulp consistency, neither too runny nor too thick (because it would be very difficult to apply). Don’t use metal to mix the clay.

With damp hair, spread the clay paste all over the scalp with a brush, and then gently massage the skin with your fingertips in a circular motion for a few minutes. Do not rub the clay on your hair as this can cause strong friction and damage your hair . Let it rest for 20 minutes. Rinse well with lukewarm water. You can apply the clay to dry hair as well, as you prefer.

Using clay on hair

You can use clay on your hair every 15 days.

The use of clay can be combined with vegetable oils and essential oils specific to your hair type. It’s a delight!

Apple cider vinegar is a common additive to mud treatments . There is a good synergy between the two. Therefore, instead of water, you can use apple cider vinegar to treat dandruff and seborrhea, or to increase shine. It also helps reduce the pH of the clay. More information on apple cider vinegar for skin and hair .
