How To Safely Abort

An unwanted pregnancy carries mixed emotions – fear, excitement, panic, or a mixture of all three. But what if you know that having a child just isn’t an option for you right now?

In Spain, abortion is a legal and safe way to interrupt a pregnancy up to 14 weeks.

In this post we are going to explain to you which are the abortive methods available for women who are in the first trimester of pregnancy: medical or pharmacological and surgical suction.

Regardless of which of them applies, we recommend that you put yourself in good hands, such as at the Isadora Clinic in Madrid, which has hospital facilities and highly qualified professionals with great experience.

Drug-induced abortion

It involves the use of drugs, specifically the drug RU-486 (antiprogesterone) , to induce an abortion. The function of this medicine is to prevent the hormone progesterone from developing its normal physiological actions, which makes it impossible for the embryo to implant in the wall of the uterus.

This method can be used up to 7 weeks (provided that the patient does not present certain diseases and under medical supervision) from the first day of the last period, applying different doses depending on the duration of the pregnancy.

The abortion pill is taken in person at the clinic or doctor’s office. Most women have no symptoms after taking it, although some experienced temporary discomfort and nausea.

One week after the abortion, a review takes place to ensure that it has been carried out completely.

RU-486 in the correct doses causes a complete abortion in 96-98% of cases up to 7 weeks.

Advantage

One of its main advantages is that a surgical procedure is avoided ; that is, there are no injections, anesthesia, or medical instruments involved.

The pills are easy to take and abortion can be done safely up to 7 weeks of pregnancy. It does not affect your chances of getting pregnant in the future.

Drawbacks

The downside to this drug method is that it takes longer to complete . Most of the bleeding occurs in the first 2 days, but it can continue for more days or even a couple of weeks afterward.

In some cases, the dose may need to be repeated to achieve a complete abortion.

Abortion caused by surgical intervention

Suction

Suction involves the evacuation of the contents of the uterus using a suction instrument.

It is an outpatient procedure using a local or general anesthetic. Depending on the gestation period, this method takes 3 to 10 minutes to complete, and has a 95-100% success rate up to 14 weeks of pregnancy.

Most women are well enough to go home 3 to 6 hours later, although there will be light bleeding for the first few days. Bleeding may continue from time to time for weeks afterward.

ADVANTAGE

The advantage of this simple surgical method is that it only takes a few minutes. Thanks to the use of anesthesia, the pain will be less , and you will always be accompanied by members of the medical staff.

Recovery after termination of pregnancy is faster . You will be able to lead a practically normal life in a short time.

It can be performed in a more advanced stage of pregnancy than a medical abortion.

And in this case, the chances of getting pregnant again are not reduced either.

DRAWBACKS

It is more invasive . In some cases, anesthetics and pain medications can cause side effects.

In addition to these two options, there are other safe but less common alternatives for termination of pregnancy:

Dilation and evacuation (D and E)

This is the surgical abortion method that is usually used in the second trimester, usually after 14 weeks of pregnancy.

It is about inducing a cervical dilation to be able to carry out the interruption with surgical tools. In this case there are more complications , since the safety of the procedure depends both on the adequate visibility of the cervix and on the time of gestation. That is why it is recommended less than the previous ones.

Dilation and curettage

This surgical procedure, also known as curettage , is very similar to the previous one, as it requires the use of surgical tools to remove the contents of the uterus during the first and second trimesters.

However, it is the least used because there are currently other less invasive procedures for the termination of pregnancy (such as those already mentioned) and that it requires deep sedation and has a higher risk of complications.

Regardless of the laws and regulations of each country, you deserve to have the right to make decisions about what happens to your body. And that is why we present you with several options so that you can make a safe and effective choice.
