How to Get Rid of Frizzy Hair

This is another issue that worries many women: the so-called “frizz” or frizz. Frizz is those very curly and thick hair that is found in the middle and upper part of the head. This “goose bumps” of the hair is the simple fact that the cuticle of the hairs are open. On the other hand, the absence of nutrients can also cause the hair to be “frizzy”.

Frizzy and wavy hair needs special care. This type of hair has big problems with drying and therefore has more frizz.

In general, when hair is very frizzy, it is a sign that it is dehydrated. For these cases, the problem has a solution and the best according to hairdressers: one good hydration and cauterization .

If hydration does not work, or if frizz is characteristic of the person himself, another possible solution is progressive straightening , check it out in our article.

Factors that contribute to frizz

  • Climate : when humidity increases, hair becomes even more electric and frizzy.
  • Irons: the heat of the iron lifts the cuticle, leaving the strands dry and dehydrated, causing the appearance of frizz.
  • Chemicals : with contact with chemicals, the hair cuticle opens, emerging “goose bumps” from the hairs. If not treated properly, over time, hair loses keratin ( see how to regain keratin ) and breaks easily, worsening the appearance and number of unruly hairs.
  • Lack of hair care : Brushing every day, using low-quality products and lack of hydration can weaken and break hair.

Tips to avoid “frizz”

Get a weekly hydration

Hydrated hair has almost no frizz. When your hair is lacking in oils and water, frizz appears even after you have done the keratin. To restore all these nutrients that the hair needs, there is a routine care called a capillary calendar . This capillary schedule consists of taking care of the hair in parts: hydration, nutrition and reconstruction. The hydration of the hair is restored, the nutrition returns the oils and vitamins and the proteins begin the reconstruction. Doing this treatment program also reduces frizz.

Use vegetable oils to your advantage

When you hydrate at home, add vegetable oil to your cream. These oils help hydration, nutrition and strengthening of the hair. You can use coconut oil, avocado, wheat germ, castor, and almond. More information on the various vegetable oils .

Thermal protector

Thermal protectors are essential because they protect hair from the dryer and straightener, they also reduce frizz. They help in the gliding of the brush when drying and the hair is accommodated more easily. There are protectors in the form of a spray (more liquid) and in creams, which are suitable for thicker, voluminous or curly hair.

Avoid using sulfate shampoos

Most shampoos have strong surfactants, which are substances responsible for cleaning the hair, and insoluble compounds in masks, such as mineral oils. Unfortunately, the sulfates present in the shampoo detonate and dry the hair, causing, among many effects, frizz. If you wash your hair too often, and you notice the appearance of frizz, avoid shampooing your hair so many times a week. Review all the information you need on sulfate-free shampoos and how to use a sulfate-free shampoo to avoid frizz.

Try the co-wash technique

The technique for washing hair with conditioner is only very welcome if your hair is very dry. Check what the co-washing technique is all about .

Do the last rinse with cold water and, if possible, without chlorine

Cold water acts as a kind of “seal” on the hair. When washing your hair, especially in summer, give yourself a final rinse with cold water. If the water is filtered or mineral, even better, because chlorine also damages the hair.

Use apple cider vinegar on your hair

Vinegar seals the cuticle, which reduces hair frizz and makes it shinier. Dilute 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and then the hair conditioner and rinse it, apply this mixture on the hair. Do not rinse. Learn more about apple cider vinegar on hair here .

The best hair treatment after washing

Frizz is a static phenomenon, and friction is responsible for increasing it. One suggestion is to avoid rubbing when towel drying your hair. Use regular cotton towels, or even a paper towel (the same one from the kitchen). Avoid detangling the hair with your fingers, because contact with your hands generates frizz, it is better to choose wooden combs.

Be careful with the dryer

Beware of the very hot dryer! Try to use a warm temperature and keep the dryer away from the hair, making a circular motion, this prevents the hair from drying out after drying.

Check out our article on which is better, the dryer or the hair straightener.

This is a salon trick that we should always use. Every time you finish drying your hair, blow out cool air. This will help reduce frizz. Don’t forget this tip!

Beware of the street air

This advice seems like a joke … but you can see that if you go outside with your hair wet, the wind will make it frizz more than normal. This is because hair that is wet is attracted to dry air. Try to leave the house with dry hair, even naturally.

The shampoo opens the cuticles to clean the hair, and the air conditioner works to close these cuticles, thereby preventing frizz.

Use specific anti-frizz products

There are several ointments, repair creams , silicone and leave-in that are anti-frizz. Some repair creams have this function and can be applied at any time. You can carry it in your wallet. Those with unruly hair will know the power of leave-ins to control it. Helps control volume, frizz and also protects hair.

Straight haircut

Finishing the split ends of your hair with a straight cut will help reduce frizz while eliminating dry ends and leaving your hair more beautiful . Weekly moisturizing after a straight cut will help prevent split ends or dry out.

Fixative products

Do not overuse styling products such as fixers, as they dry out the hair. Try to wear them only on holidays, or sporadically. This avoids giving the hair the “straw” effect. Most of these products have alcohol in their composition, which dries out the hair.
