One of the most relevant and common points in quality products designed for the care and beautification of the skin and that are also made from propolis is the amount of positive substances present in them that form a protective shield for our health.
Propolis contains over 50 different natural antioxidants or flavonoids , allowing skin to stay clear, healthy, and radiant.
As if that were not enough, propolis is used in hair care products in order to nourish and strengthen our hair from roots to ends, including our scalp.
The common thing is that in shampoos with propolis we find some essential oils, flavonoids, minerals and vitamins that help keep hair soft and strong.

But … what are these properties of propolis?
Propolis acts as a bactericidal, fungicidal, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiseptic element that presents a protective barrier against certain agents that threaten our health. Below we detail them according to their property.
- Bactericidal, it fights the bacteria that attack and destroy the skin.
- Fungicide, eliminate and prevent fungi that cause injuries, discomfort and bad odor
- Antioxidant, the antioxidant property is responsible for reducing the reach of free radicals that destroy tissues and promote premature aging.
- Antimicrobial, it destroys the microbes present in the environment and that can be a threat to our health.
- Antiseptic, it kills the germs to which we expose ourselves when we touch certain dirty elements.
Data and studies in favor of the use and consumption of propolis
The quality of propolis soaps is measured by the content of flavonoids found in the main ingredient, propolis.
These flavonoids are natural pigments that we can find in plants, vegetables and other natural organisms with the exception of humans, and that also fulfill a protective function against the damage caused by oxidizing agents such as UV rays, environmental pollution and chemical substances present in food. , among others.
The human body is not capable of naturally producing these protective chemicals, so it is forced to acquire them from food or through certain food or vitamin supplements.
Study on the scope and benefits of flavonoids also present in propolis soap
In a research work carried out by: S. Martínez-Flórez, J. González-Gallego, JM Culebras and M.ª J. Tuñón, from the Department of Physiology, University of León and Hospital de León. Spain. Oriented to hospital nutrition.
It was assured that flavonoids, which are also present in propolis “ are widely distributed in plants, fruits, vegetables and in various beverages , and are substantial components of the non-energy component of the human diet. Likewise, flavonoids are highly valued in the cosmetology industry, where they are used primarily in creams. ”
With which, there is sufficient evidence to determine that the benefits provided by propolis (in its various presentations) for this particular, propolis soap constitute a series of factors that go by virtue of the care, improvement and beautification of the skin.
In this sense, the suggestions and recommendations on its use are correct since they significantly improve the areas of the skin on which it is applied directly.
How to prepare propolis soap at home
The preparation of propolis soap requires the following ingredients:
- Neutral soap as a base of 100g
- Crystal Honey 92g per
- 6g of honey

Propolis soap preparation
- We cut the soap that we will use as a base into small pieces and add it to a container with heat resistance and that we can also place in the microwave if we do not want to use our kitchen for it.
- Melt the base soap in the microwave or in a double boiler. At the same time, we melt the little honey crystals and beeswax in a double boiler pot or in the microwave.
- Once all the ingredients are melted, I add honey and the beeswax to the melted soap base and mix gently.
- Finally, we add the active propolis, the fragrance drops and mix one last time.
- Place the mixture you have made in a mold, spray a little alcohol on the setting soap to avoid unpleasant bubbles and let it harden for a few hours.
- To add the texture of the hive, add a small square of bubble wrap to the mold before pouring the mixture. This last touch will give your soap a fun and natural look.
Propolis-based soap is the jewel in the crown in the care and cleaning of our skin
Thanks to the fact that propolis is used by honey bees as a natural antiseptic, it was possible to detect that this substance has excellent preservative properties that are highly coveted by manufacturers of skin care products.
In this sense and considering the natural antibacterial properties of propolis and the mineral load and natural flavonoids that it possesses, it makes a lot of sense that different manufacturers of products for the care and treatment of the skin include it in their preparations.
