What’s the difference between Permanent dye and Color bath

Hello girls, we are going to start a new section called “The differences between” and it will answer the questions and point out the contrasts between the most diverse concepts.

Today’s topic is the difference between permanent dye and a color wash , a problem that causes a lot of confusion and always raises many questions.

Permanent dye

The permanent dye acts on the entire structure of the hair and changes the tone completely , it also contains ammonia and is not compatible with all types of chemicals (henna, sodium hydroxide and others). Up to 2 shades of natural hair color can be lowered , it covers 100% of gray hair because it acts directly on the inside of the hair, replacing the natural color with the desired color. With ammonia, the color lasts longer, but if you wash your hair often it will fade faster.

Unlike the color bath, it eliminates the natural color of the hair and replaces it with the desired color. It contains ammonia and other oxidants, which make the pigment fix in the hairs, for this, the dye modifies the structure of the hair, the cuticle, since it eliminates the natural pigments and replaces them.

The colorant completely covers white hair , but it also darkens or lightens the rest, due to its chemical components, it is necessary that you take precautions if you have applied other chemical processes, because there may be incompatible active ingredients.

As it has a very strong chemical composition, the dye can dry out the hair , something that does not happen with the use of color baths .

Advantages of permanent dye

The tones are stronger, more intense and uniform. 100% gray hair is covered and you can also bleach your hair. It has a long lasting effect.

Disadvantages of permanent dye

  • You will need to do a touch-up of the root after 20 or 30 days.
  • In the case of the application of other chemical products, you will have to make an evaluation of their compatibility with the dye.
  • It is much more aggressive and dries more, so you should avoid it if you already have dry hair .
  • If you don’t like the applied shade, you have to wait about 7 days to dye it again.

Color bath

It is a semi-permanent color pigment that is deposited in the hair cuticle . It acts like “makeup”, that is, it fades as you wash your hair. It does not have ammonia in its composition, therefore, the pigments are not able to penetrate inside the hairs, which reduces its duration. Also, they do not bleach your hair! They are less aggressive and can be applied to some chemically treated hair.

The color bath gives more shine because it is less abrasive, although the semi-permanent dye does not contain ammonia, but it can contain oxidants in its formulation. It is a very mild product, without main contraindications and serves to improve color and give hair a shine bath .

Advantages of the color bath

  • They are very soft and the formula does not contain ammonia; its duration is 20 to 25 washes .
  • It is compatible with any chemical product.
  • Gives shine and does not dry out hair .
  • Covers about 40% of gray hair.
  • If the result is not satisfactory, the product can be reapplied .

Disadvantages of color bath

  • Short duration because it partially covers the hair.
  • It does not lighten or darken the hairs .
