Summary of Clinique Smart Multi-Corrector Anti-Aging Serum by Clinique
This serum from Clinique makes some eye-catching claims, but before we tackle them, it’s worth noting that the formula is not as unique or personalized as it sounds.
It mainly contains cross-over ingredients from Clinique’s Repairwear Laser Focus Serum and its Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector, the latter being the most similar to Smart. Despite the formula overlap, Clinique Smart makes claims that the other two products do not.
But let’s see if it really is a smarter option!
Clinique’s big claim (of which we are very skeptical) is that this serum can somehow “perceive” where your skin needs repair, and where it does not.
It is supposed to be able to identify and then respond to the different “signals” that the skin sends when, for example, the tone is uneven, dark spots are present and there has been a loss of elasticity.
Clinique maintains that these signals differ depending on the condition of the skin, hence their claim that this product provides a personalized repair.
Here’s how it’s supposed to work: You apply the serum and once it detects where the trouble spots are, it releases repairing ingredients to improve the problem, and where no damage is detected, it doesn’t stop .
The face is a small area, so how could the ingredients, such as the emollients it contains, only be able to spread over certain areas? How would any of the plant extracts or salicylic acid it includes taste to go to one area of damaged skin cells but not another?
This is not possible, but even if it were possible, all other Clinique products that contain these same ingredients (and there are several) would do the same.
Like any well-formulated serum (or moisturizer), it contains barrier-repairing ingredients that can, to some extent, reduce the signs of sun damage.
Barrier repair ingredients are an important part of serums, because research has shown that sun damage affects the skin’s barrier, leading to a number of skin problems.
Therefore, it is “smart” that Clinique has included such ingredients in their product formula, but they are not the only brand that uses them.
Cell-communicating ingredients, such as the Argireline peptide in this serum, are believed to be able to adhere to receptor sites on skin cells, where the ingredient can “tell” that damaged cells are misbehaving to start creating better and healthier cells.
Assuming the correct “connections” are made, good cellular communication results, and over time, the skin begins to look and act younger, because the cells are now communicating as they did before they were damaged.
Keep in mind that these ingredients go to all cells with receptor sites for them, not just a few that show signs of damage.
This entire category of ingredients is fascinating and absolutely the future of anti-aging skincare, but, as with barrier repair ingredients, Clinique isn’t the only brand to take advantage of it.
Antioxidants also play an important role (especially vitamin C), and they are abundant in this serum, although again, the same antioxidants appear in many Clinique products, lowering the Smart Anti-Aging Multi-Corrector status.
When a product loaded with antioxidants is applied , at high concentrations , these ingredients strengthen the skin’s defenses, as they reduce inflammation and, in some cases, stimulate healthy collagen production.
If you’re wondering about the salicylic acid in this cosmetic, the amount appears to be too low to benefit the skin, not to mention that this product’s pH of 6.1 is well above the range that salicylic acid needs to exfoliate.
One cause for concern is that this product contains a higher than usual amount of grapefruit peel extract .
Appearing as Citrus grandis (grapefruit) peel extract on the ingredient list, the peel is loaded with compounds known as furanocoumarins and coumarins, which are primarily responsible for what is known as a phototoxic reaction when the skin is exposed to the sun. The result can leave the skin discolored.
Needless to say, this is not the desired result when you use a product that promises to improve skin tone, as this serum claims.
If you choose to use this product, be sure to protect your skin from UV exposure every day, rain or shine. Skipping this important step can make grapefruit peel extract a potential problem that gets in the way of this serum being able to produce good results.
Although this product is not smarter than other Clinique serums, it is an overall good formula for all skin types.
It feels light, is very silky and can serve as a makeup base. The matte formula contains mineral “brightening” pigments that provide a subtle glow that gently stimulates dull complexions, a benefit many other serums have as well.
Alternative
If you prefer to avoid irritating ingredients and phototoxic reactions, we recommend that you leave your skin care in the hands of a better serum, that of Nezeni Cosmetics.
It also contains a good amount of antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and natural extracts that fight the signs of aging, but without causing any other disorder or consequence.
